Find the Perfect Hair for Your Face Shape

Finding the perfect haircut is about more than simply finding the best style – you have to find your best style. Even the most amazing cut won’t look right if it’s wrong for your face shape. The best hairstyles are those that work to accentuate the natural features of your face, highlighting your best qualities.

To find the best haircut for you, start by figuring out what your face shape is. This is easy to determine with the help of a ruler and some guidelines, measuring the dimensions and proportions of your facial features. You can also simply take a photo of yourself and download a face metering app that can help decide for you.

If measuring yourself, start by measuring the length and width of the center of your face. Then measure the width of your forehead, followed by the width of your jaw. Take note of the shape of your jawline, and whether it forms a harder or softer angle.

While your face may not fit perfectly into a single category, find the shape that is the closest match. The five face shapes are: oval, heart, diamond, square and round.

Oval

Oval faces are longer than they are wide. Your forehead will be slightly wider than your jawline, which is soft and rounded. Oval faces are versatile, and many styles work well with them. Some celebrities with oval faces are Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, Cindy Crawford, and Julia Roberts. The different styles these ladies have rocked over the years illustrate the ease of the oval face shape, and how it looks great with both long and short hairs, chunky layers or wispy bobs.

Heart

The most prominent feature of the heart shaped face is a forehead that is significantly wider over a pointed chin. From adorable to sexy, this face shape can pull of many different looks. Halle Berry and Reese Witherspoon provide examples of how heart faces look great with both long, full hair and even the shortest pixie cuts. Zooey Deschanel is another heart shaped face celebrity who is known for her bold bangs and long waves that frame her face.

Diamond

The diamond shaped face is similar to the heart shaped, except that instead of staying broad, the top of the forehead tapers slightly, creating the diamond shape. The cheeks are the widest part of the face, and are generally high and pointed and the jawline has harder angles than a round face. This face shape is less flexible, demanding care when selecting a style that properly frames the diamond shape. Hair for diamond faces should make the forehead appear wider, keeping more volume near the top of the face and drawing attention away from the prominence of your cheekbones. Long curls can provide great texture, or if you have straight hair, add texture with layers. Avoid blunt bobs and center parts, but blunt, bold bangs can help shape the face and draw more attention to the lower section of your face. Don’t be afraid to experiment, though. Rihanna is an example of a celebrity with a distinctly diamond face who has always looked gorgeous with short hair that adds to the frame of her face.

Square

Square shaped faces, as they sound, are roughly as wide as they are long, and the forehead and jawline are roughly the same shape. These faces do not have pointed chins, and are defined by square jawlines. Bangs look great on square faces and can be worn many ways, such as some of Lady Gaga’s looks, or Emily Deschanel’s long bob. Natalie Portman and Demi Moore dress their square faces with long waves and a center part which make square faces appear longer than they are.

Round

Round faces are much like square faces, but they have a round jawline instead of the hard angles, and often include round, prominent cheeks. Round faces can be highlighted with both long and short hair, they often lend themselves well to pixie cuts, like Ginnifer Goodwin, which highlight the features of the face. For a more slimming look, try longer hair with a side part, such as Isla Fisher’s textured waves or a center part like Drew Barrymore.

No matter your face shape, there is a perfect haircut out there for you, but finding the right shape is the best place to start. Before you go to the salon, take some time to look at your face and figure out what is right for you, based on these guidelines.
